What to See at Lake Logan State Park

There are truly some hidden gems in Hocking Hills, and for outdoor enthusiasts, one of those treasures is Lake Logan State Park. This state park in Ohio showcases the area’s topography in a different way; instead of rock formations and waterfalls, the open landscape and 400-acre Lake Logan is the draw for relaxing paddling adventures, spotting waterfowl and many bird species, and peaceful fishing spots.

Unlike the very popular trailheads in Hocking Hills State Park, Lake Logan State Park feels more spacious, with expansive views across the water and fewer people overall. The majority of visitors to this park will likely have a fishing rod in hand, as Lake Logan is known as one of the best fishing spots in Ohio. Anglers can hope to catch varieties like northern pike, bass, bluegill, and saugeye. Spending an afternoon at this state park is just one of the best things to do in Hocking Hills!

Best Things to Do at Lake Logan State Park

Lake Logan sits in Hocking County in southeastern Ohio. The area was once home to the Wyandot people, who established a large village called Oldtown along the Hocking River about one mile upstream from what is now the city of Logan. While Lake Logan State Park may not have the name recognition of Hocking Hills State Park, there are so many pleasant things to do here, especially for those who enjoy more leisurely outdoor activities.

  • One of the most popular highlights is Lake Logan Beach. During warmer months, the designated swimming area provides a sandy shoreline and a refreshing place to cool off after a morning of exploring. The beach is well-maintained and offers a classic summer lake experience. Guests who spend their mornings hiking in Ohio’s forested trails often appreciate an afternoon spent by the water, relaxing in the sun, or wading into the lake.
  • Boating is also a major draw at Lake Logan State Park. The lake allows electric motors (up to 10 horsepower), canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, keeping the environment quiet and relaxed. Paddling along the shoreline gives you a closer look at local wildlife and picturesque wilderness.
  • You’ll likely see many people fishing from boats or the shoreline. If you do plan on casting a line, be sure to have your valid Ohio fishing license.
  • Hiking in the Hocking Hills is one of the most popular activities, and Lake Logan is a great location for beginner hikers or those hoping for an easy walk. The one-mile Pine Vista Hiking Trail circles a hilltop and is a peaceful route under white and black oaks, tuliptree, shagbark, and pignut hickory.
  • During the spring, Lake Logan State Park is an excellent destination for seeing wildflowers on the forest floor.
  • Birding enthusiasts will find plenty to see at this Ohio destination. The park attracts a range of waterfowl, including ducks and geese, as well as herons and kingfishers drawn to the lake’s healthy fish population. In the surrounding wooded areas, songbirds, including warblers and thrushes, are common, while hawks often circle overhead. On a visit around dusk, birdwatchers may even catch sight of or hear hooting owls. There are also great nearby places for birdwatching in Ohio!
